we survived

Yesterday was my birthday.
It was a lovely day from the breakfast in bed beginning, to the going out to eat end. That pretty much sums up what I want for my birthday. I don't want to cook. Normally I enjoy cooking very much, but you know how sometimes you get in a rut and you just can't think of a meal beyond crackers, peanut butter and fruit? That is how it's been around here. Anyway, birthday! The children made me some amazing presents, the husband, being a good husband, wished he could have done more, when in actuality he did great. It was a wonderful day.

The picture above is of me going home from the hospital. My oldest sister, Beth, is holding me, with my next oldest sister, Kim, looking on. You are right. There are no car seats. In that picture I am only days old. You are also right. There are no seats to speak of in that van, and my newborn self is being entrusted to a 9 and 8 year old. But you know what? We survived. And beautifully.

Instead of inspiring horror, this kind of picture just makes me happy. And it makes me worry less for my own kids. My parents did their very best with what they had and we all turned out fine. I'll do the very best with what I have and my kids will turn out fine. With the grace of God and a loving family, we will survive and we will thrive.

We are now heading out camping with friends where hopefully our children will do something dangerous and hopefully they will survive.
Have a wonderful weekend, all of you!

Happy Birthday!

Love the new look on the blog.

Our neighbors used to have a van like that, and we'd all pile in the back, 8 kids, leaning against that back door (even though the parents told us not to), and one day, it opened and my neighbor rolled out onto the street. She survived too. Fortunately we weren't going too fast.

How we loved that van! Too bad the seatbelt law had to ruin everything! In fact, we had several pretty "unsafe" cars and vans back when safety FIRST wasn´t the biggest issue around! Love that picture too - it definitely shows the excitement of two girls with their new BABY!

Your birthday sounds like it was great! I love the picture. How did we ever survive our dangerous childhoods?

happy birthday kris - sounds lovely!

(and i'm glad i'm not the only one in a food rut.)

it's amazing any of us survived our ultra-dangerous childhoods - i have fond memories of the back seat of a chevy, playing 'big bull, little bull' and 'moving couch' (ask troy).

birthday hugs to you!

Oh Happy Birthday to you so many days late. I am glad you were able to not cook all day; that is also what I want on my birthday, plenty of eating and none of it from my labor. And I adore this picture. Thank you for sharing it. Peace and goodness dear one. Will have to get to Chesterton sometime soon and see you.
