And she's just my type!

This girl, this crafty little girl, turned nine on Sunday.   For weeks she'd been counting down, telling everyone she spoke to, "Easter Sunday's my birthday!  I'll be nine!  On Easter!!!!"

She turned nine on Easter Sunday.  We celebrated with family and some home made piƱatas and a whole lot of food.

She has a love for making things, this one.  She made the apron at the top and the arrangement above, all by herself.  Not a day goes by when she doesn't come downstairs with something she has sewn, painted, stuffed, knit, drawn, or arranged.  We are blessed to have her with all her creativity, sweetness and light.

Happy Birthday Elia Luz!

Just something I made.

Do you remember the project I started a while ago?

Here it is completed!

I've made a couple other things, pictures coming soon.

Her shirt says SublimI'mAwesomeinal

And she is awesome. She's super helpful, a great reader, even keeled and happy. She just recently learned how to swim short distances under water, thanks to her "magic goggles" and is fearless on her scooter. She loves staying up late and more often than not she will appear deep into the night, after all the brothers and sisters have fallen asleep, wrapped in her blanket and asking if she can stay up with us. "I just can't sleep.", she says. And more often than not, we let her. She still doesn't mind being called Smellia, and claims it won't bother her even when she's a teenager. We'll see about that. She's a cool kid, the Smells.

Flower Child in the making

The girls love it when I make arrangements. They love helping me pick out the flowers, they hover as I cut them and drop them in buckets, they anxiously watch as I use the flowers up. They choose "their" flowers long before the belong to them. They watch me use up all these beautiful flowers and worry that there will be none left over for them. But somehow there always seems to be a little bit left.
It's a miracle.

The Elia has been honing her flower skills for quite some time now. We lived in Chicago when she was born and I was still working at my favorite flower shop. When she was a few weeks old I went back to work three days a week. We would get up early, I would pack her in the maya, fold up her little portable swing, gather enough diapers and an outfit change or two, and hop on the red line all the way down to the store. At the time I didn't work at the main store, but managed our smaller south loop location. It was just me, Elia, Joana and Richie, hanging out all day.

She would spend her days in the maya, in her swing, being held by my co-workers and sleeping in empty flower boxes. She was so sweet and easy. Yes, there were moments of uncontrollable crying, but those were pretty rare, and thankfully she chose our off-peak hours for fussing. And if she started fussing and I couldn't get to her, my co-workers were always happy to hold a baby.

Man, I had the best boss ever.

I stopped working even part time, especially after moving to Indiana and popping out a couple more kids, but still managed to make it into the shop for holidays and occasional work. I have quite a few pictures of Elia and then Josie sleeping in little make shift toddler bed/boxes in the back room of LaSalle, or tucked under a counter. They were happy to play with scraps of flowers, watch shows on the computer in the office, and generally charm the pants off anyone they came across.

Again, best boss ever.

All that playing and sleeping in boxes is paying off. Elia made her very own arrangement this Easter. She cut the foam, found a dish, taped it in and arranged it all herself. We carried this lovely piece of work all the way to Grandma and Grandpa's house where it graced a table for Easter dinner. It even survived a little stomping by the Deli's feet in the car. She's just that good.

She's been bugging for a pocket knife like mine so she can carry it with her and make arrangements should the mood strike. I am not procuring said knife quickly enough for her liking. As soon as I go to the wholesaler, my dear, it will be yours. And then watch out, Northwest Indiana! Grand flower arrangements are coming your way!

A Super-tastic time

On Saturday, we celebrated Mikey and Elia with a superhero birthday party.  We somehow managed to not take any decent pictures, and now Blogger/Picasa is not allowing me to post any edited pictures, so once again you get the grainy ones.  Enjoy.
All the friends arrived and donned their super capes (courtesy of a a Super Grandma - she sewed up 20 capes, can you believe it!) and joined the festivities.  We played pin the rope on Wonder Woman, find the Kryptonite and bash the pinata.

We did not take pictures of the fun, but we did take one hundred different pictures of the Suuuper Caaake! (sung out loud in a big Taaa Daaa!)  It was indeed super.  It was amazing...ly...

Super...
...roBUST...ly..

can't.  look.  away....

What was I saying?
Oh!  Yes!
The cake!
It was awesome!

And also made by the Super Grandma.  Did we make anything for this party?  No.  We just decided a theme, then called up Grandma and Grandpa and had them make us stuff.  They ARE super heroes that way.
You should get you some of them.

The little heroes of the day loved the cake.

We didn't take any pictures of all the goings on, maybe because we were having too much fun celebrating two of our sweet kiddos with a great bunch of family and friends.  Thank you to you for coming out and joining us. A super time was had by all.

Birthday Pirate Princess

There was a birthday in this house not too long ago. Everyone was greeted with a hearty, "Aaaargh". Pirates and Princesses - they go together, right?

Beautiful princess and castle cakes from Grandma. Tasted as good as they looked, too. We had a treasure hunt (the pictures didn't really work...) a whole bunch of food and fancy dresses for the birthday girl.
Grandma made a pinafore/tutu for the girlie, it's been worn to the library, the store and just for fun.

So! Happy birthday to the Smell!

Goodies!!

When Abuela arrived we opened up the packages of goodies. Some from her, some from the ABCD's. Boy was that fun!
Whiskey!
...or should we say, Calaca!

super cool.

New dresses and T-shirts from Abuela.
...and, Yes he is guapo.
If strangely bent.

We had a little visit from Spidey.
Spidey wears only the mask at night.
He saves the outfit for daylight hours, let it breathe a little.

A very unhappy puppy showed up at one point.
I think he missed his 100 other brothers.
Or maybe he didn't think the vest matched...

I think he was just lonely.

But then the roaring tiger showed up and frightened the blues away.

Lonely Hearts Club Band

So the girls were playing pic-nic in the porch and the dictator, I mean Elia, was commanding her subjects around. Do this, do that, wait here, pour me some tea, sit in that spot...

Something caught my ear, though. Did she just say that? There it goes again! Yes, yes, she Did just say that.

"Josie, don't pour the tea yet, we have to wait for Grandma and Sgt. Pepper."

How We Cook

I have a lot of help when I cook. Everybody has a job. Deli makes sure the faucet is turned on occasionally - for hand washing, of course! - he also makes sure the hand soap is never too far from his mouth, mmm tasty!

Mikey's job is to keep track of all my wood and metal utensils. He lays them out on the counter and hands me all the items I might need. Making cookies, mama? Hows about a meat pounder? No? Maybe a whisk? Wooden spoon? Here, take two!

The girls pull up chairs or stools and direct things. They do a lot of taste testing. Baking soda tastes good, flour tastes good, butter tastes Really good. Ginger is too hot and sugar should be eaten by the handful.

Both girls help measure and pour. Sometimes we pour a little for the floor and the counter and the various mouths, but usually all the ingredients make it into the meal.

So if you come by my house unexpectedly, please forgive the mess on the floor. I've had a lot of help. And besides, if I clean it up what will Del do for an afternoon snack?

What is Chicken Made of?

So the girls have been really interested in where our food comes from, i.e., how things grow, where things grow, what our different foods are made of. We've been having lots of dinnertable discussions about what ham is made of, where potatoes grow and why chicken is made out of chicken and not pork. Very heady stuff.

We were talking about pork last night and I was giving way too much detail about the butchering process, but they seemed interested, so I ran with it.

Elia: What happens after they kill the pig?

Mami: They usually skin it, take out its insides and cut it into all the pieces we eat.

Josie: Do they cut the head off?

Mami: Yes.

Elia (with furrowed brow): Do they kill baby pigs for food?

Mami (thinking she is in for some trouble): Yes.

Elia: hmmmm..... I bet they're yummy.

So I guess we're not going vegetarian any time soon.

Ancient Roman

At co-op we're learning ancient history. One of the older boys brought in a helmet and shield he had made. I'm pretty sure the Roman soldiers used bike helmets as the base for their gold helmets... This boy was gracious enough to share his creation with all the little kiddos. Josie loved being "the killer guy".

Wicked Witches

This is what happens when your mama works at a flower shop. I brought home some of the wrappers that Birds of Paradise are shipped in and we suddenly had a house full of cackling, evil, wicked witches. I believe they were both named Maleficent. There was a prince too, but he only had three pointy fingers. And they kept falling off. So he spent the night crying in frustration. And being poked by his sisters.

This Purse

This purse eats with Elia, sleeps with Elia, goes to church with Elia, goes to the library with Elia, is stuffed with all the essentials a girl might need. Chapstick, tissues, a hanky, legos, a flip flop, pony tail holders, mittens, pens and paper. Oh! And a library card. This purse is very, very important.
Thank you Aunt Katie.

Babies

Disclaimer: This method of punishment is not endorsed by the Mami.

Elia walks into the living room carrying her little Moses basket from Abuela and a somewhat lumpy pillowcase.

Mami: What's in your basket, El?
Elia: My good babies.
Mami: What's in the pillowcase?
Elia (with an eyeroll): My bad babies.

Spelling

Ellie recently learned that my name is not "Mami". My real name is in fact "Kris". She has learned how to spell my name. She's really good at spelling. This is how you spell my Real name:
